General "Upset Stomach" Diet

Patient Education on Management of Gastroenteritis

Twenty-four to forty-eight hours of nothing but clear liquids. The "clear liquid diet" should be divided into three equal groups:

  • WATER: What constitutes water is simple, H2O

  • SALTY: Bouillon/Broth (chicken, beef, soy)

  • SWEET: Fruit juice, lemon-lime soft drink, ginger ale

Absolutely no solid food until vomiting and/or diarrhea ceases. Once symptoms improve on a clears diet within 48hrs, the diet may then be advanced to "Bland foods" which are less irritating to your stomach and digestive tract. An example includes the BRAT diet:

  • B: Bananas

  • R: Rice

  • A: Applesauce

  • T: Toast

Not Improving?

If symptoms have not improved on a clears diet within 48 hours, or at any point you develop any of the following symptoms you should call your health care providers office and may need to be seen. Additional "Red Flags" that indicate you should be seen sooner are:

  • Increasing abdominal pain

  • Worsening Vomiting or diarrhea

  • Vomiting or diarrhea that has not improved with a clears diet

  • High fever

  • Blood in stool
